Impulse control isn’t a fixed talent. It’s an ability you can train. Within our brain we have a “go function” whether you’re picking up a glass of water or running, this function works to propel us into action. The go function is only half the story. The no-go function is responsible for inhibiting impulses. It’s what needs to fire up if we’re going to resist that cookie.
The problem is as we get older we often have fewer opportunities to exercise this no-go function.
